Chapter 6

“Drew?”

A gentle caress swept over Drew’s cheek, light as a feather. Drew almost felt as though he was floating on a fluffy cloud somewhere, with a nice plump pillow and a fuzzy blanket. God, this was the calmest he’d been in what felt like decades. Everything that happened since he crossed into Homespun—the surreal yet wonderful sex with Oliver, the sudden introduction to magic, the attack by whatever that big lizard was—vanished in the embracing comfort of unconsciousness.

Unconsciousness?

“Drew, please wake up.”

Another stroke over his cheek, and Drew’s eyes fluttered open.

Oliver leaned over him, blatant concern welling in his amber eyes. Drew lie stretched out on the living room couch, presumably placed there after he was knocked out. The man in question crouched beside him, his hands ghosting over Drew in a worrisome assessment of his physical wellness.

When Drew spoke, his voice was still rough with sleep. “What…what happened? What was that thing?”

Oliver forced a weak smile. His enigmatic calm vanished in the face of his concern for Drew. “He’s gone. Not for good, but that burst of magic you threw his way surprised the hell out of him. He made a run for it to wherever he’s been hiding, I’m guessing to regroup.” His hands paused in skimming over Drew’s still-lethargic body to gently squeeze his hands. “Are you okay? Do you feel all right? There’s a doctor in town who deals specifically with magical beings who can be here in—”

“I’m fine. A little bit of a headache, but nothing major.” Almost by reflex, Drew reached up to touch his head. He wasn’t sure what he expected, but he wouldn’t have been surprised to discover a throbbing knot or a fist-sized hole in his skull. Instead, Drew was perfectly intact save for a bit of soreness floating right behind his eyes.

Wincing as a sunbeam pouring in through the living room windows glowed in the corner of his line of sight, Drew closed his eyes and tried to focus on something else. “He. When you say ‘he,’ you mean Harry, don’t you?”

After a moment, Oliver murmured, “Yes.”

“I thought he was dead.”

“He is. His dragon, however, is stubborn.”

Drew opened his eyes wide, more startled than he’d like to admit. “That was his dragon? Wait, there’s something like that in me?”

“No,” Oliver blurted out. It didn’t reassure Drew quite as much as he imagined Oliver would like. “Whatever that thing is, it’s a mutated form of what we carry inside us. I knew Harry wasn’t right in the end, but I didn’t suspect—” Oliver shook his head in a sad sort of disbelief, but before Drew could question it his jaw clenched in determination as he sat up. “Drew, there’s something I need to retrieve from my house. I’m going to need you to stay here until I can come back with it.”

“With that thing in the house? Are you nuts?”

“I’ve already called my friend Chris. You know, the man you spoke to at the garage? He’ll protect you while I’m gone.”

Drew’s brow furrowed.
